About Arguments with Books
Arguments with Books is for serious readers and critics of ideas in our culture. For me, reading is a contact sport. The books I read are all marked up with arguments for and against the thesis, for and against certain statements, or for and against the ideas. We need to participate in the cultural conversation, and Arguments with Books is about that.
Most of the reading is on ideas—philosophy, culture, social criticism, political ideas, and more. Occasionally, some fiction or poetry may slip in, but the primary focus is serious nonfiction with cultural impact and/or significant authors who are widely followed. You will find here a break from self-help, Internet marketing, how-to books and the like.
Because it is about conversation, I invite all readers to comment and participate. Forceful opinions are fine but ad hominem attacks are not. Or, as other sites say, just don’t be a jerk.
I will announce the books I am currently reading so that readers can read along with me, if you like. Generally, I won’t comment until the reading is done, and the newsletter will provide guidance as to when that might be.
